The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Meta Human Control (MHC) section supervised the Ranger Corps MetaHumans whose prime assignment is to keep the evil Banes from terrorizing civilians. Fifteen years ago many of these superhuman operatives died in the MetaWars. Six months ago, wordspread that MHC had an extinction plan for the surviving MetaHumans.

In dead zoned Los Angeles, while the city still struggles with the aftermath of war, numerous human skins have been found. The horrified police ask the MetaHumans to investigate these gruesome homicides. Reporter Dahlia “Ember” Perkins is a recent MetaHuman who has rookie doubts that she can help her experienced superhero teammates especially against a foe who seems inhuman and non-Meta. When an assassin attempt misses her but hits one of her teammates and she remains a seemingly target, Dahlia realizes somehow she is linked to the grisly killer(s).

The second MetaWars urban fantasy (see Trance) is an entertaining thriller as superheroes struggle with their roles and responsibilities adversely impacting their civilian lives and with their fights against supervillains. Loaded with action and a well written whodunit, fans will relish this engaging entry as super-heroism means super-dud in one’s personal relationships.
